Creating Your Personal Response Plan

Creating Your Personal Response Plan

October 01, 2026

Most people don’t think about responding to a cybersecurity incident until something happens.

A phone is lost.

A debit card disappears.

An email account is compromised.

An unfamiliar transaction appears.

In those moments, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed because you’re making important decisions under pressure.

The good news is that you can make many of those decisions before anything ever happens.

Just as families prepare for severe weather or other emergencies, you can prepare for unexpected digital events.

A simple response plan won’t prevent every problem - but it can help you respond more confidently if one occurs.

Start With the Basics

Think about the accounts and devices you rely on every day.

Ask yourself:

  • Which financial accounts are most important?
  • What devices do I use to access them?
  • Who would I contact first if something happened?
  • Where would I find important account information?

Knowing the answers today can save valuable time tomorrow.

Four Questions to Build Your Plan

1. If My Phone Disappeared Today, What Would I Do?

Think through the situation before it happens.

Ask yourself:

  • Is Find My iPhone or Find My Device enabled?
  • Do I know my Apple ID or Google account password?
  • Can I lock my phone remotely?
  • Do I know how to contact my wireless carrier?
  • Which financial apps are installed on my phone?

The more prepared you are, the easier it becomes to respond.

2. If My Wallet Was Lost, What Would I Need?

Your wallet may contain:

  • Debit cards
  • Credit cards
  • Driver’s license
  • Insurance cards
  • Other important information

Ask yourself:

  • Do I know how to contact my financial institutions?
  • Can I quickly identify which cards need to be replaced?
  • Are important phone numbers saved somewhere other than my wallet?

Planning ahead helps reduce stress during an unexpected situation.

3. If My Email Account Was Compromised, What Would I Do?

Your email account often connects to many other online services.

Consider:

  • Is Multi-Factor Authentication enabled?
  • Is my recovery phone number current?
  • Is my recovery email address accurate?
  • Do I use a unique password?
  • Which accounts could someone reset through my email?

Protecting your email helps protect much of your digital life.

4. Who Would I Contact?

When something unexpected happens, knowing who to contact can make all the difference.

Create a simple list that includes:

  • First Bank of Berne
  • Credit card companies
  • Your wireless carrier
  • Important online service providers
  • A trusted family member
  • Emergency contacts

Store the list somewhere secure that you can access if your phone or wallet isn’t available.
